Are the designs different colors of stain? I've been hoping to extend my techniques.

i stained this box first then engraved my design then shallacked it. so the knotwork is negative space carved below the stain to reveal the true wood color. Hope that helps

I wish I could take credit for that but this poor box was abandoned in a thrift shop so I took it home, sanded it down, stained it up and turned it into a Celt! I agree though, the corners are pretty.
